Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen has been suspended for five games for comments about Fidel Castro, the team announced on Tuesday.

"The Marlins acknowledge the seriousness of the comments attributed to Guillen," a statement said. "The pain and suffering caused by Fidel Castro cannot be minimized especially in a community filled with victims of the dictatorship."

Guillen received the suspension after telling Time magazine that he loved Castro.

"I love Fidel Castro," he reportedly told the magazine. "I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that (expletive) is still here."

The comments rubbed many in the Miami community -- home to a large Cuban-American population -- the wrong way. Some, including Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, called for the controversial former Chicago White Sox manager to be fired, but instead he faces a five-game suspension.

Guillen apologized for his comments on Saturday.

"I will apologize if I hurt somebody's feelings, or I hurt somebody's thought," Guillen told reporters after the Marlins-Reds game on Saturday. "I want them to know I'm against everything 100 percent -- I repeat it again -- the way this man [been] treating people for the last 60 years."

Guillen is scheduled to hold a news conference in Miami on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m EDT.
