Charles Woodson is back where it all started. Officially back with the Oakland Raiders where he began his career, he is also back in his signature No. 24 jersey. Originally worn by Tracy Porter, the cornerback announced on Twitter that Woodson had in fact gotten his long-time number back.
Woodson wore No. 24 in his first eight seasons with the Oakland Raiders. It was in that number that he earned the reputation for being one of the shut-down safeties in the NFL. When he signed on with the Green Bay Packers in 2006, he switched to No. 21. Now, after re-signing with Oakland in the offseason, Woodson wanted to return to his No. 24 despite it being unavailable. The two were working on negotiations for the number, but according to the NFL Network, talks had stalled for Woodson to get his jersey back.
However, Porter tweeted Wednesday, "Well you Raiders fans...your guy has 24. It was TAKEN from me and given to him. #congrats....too funny how this biz "works."" He then quickly followed that message up with, "Not mad at all...it's just the principle and the way it was handled...said my piece, now back to football."
Porter insists the two sides are on good terms. The cornerback will now were No. 31, so Raiders fans should prepare to visit the team's website for their new jerseys to wear. During offseason workouts, Woodson was wearing a numberless jersey after he signed his one-year contract. He then sported No. 2 for a while. However, per NFL rules he would not have been able to wear that number during the regular season because it is mandated that defensive backs wear a number ranging from 20-49.
Oh the drama of the jersey. Woodson and Porter are expected to anchor the Raiders' young defense. At 36, Woodson has gone to the Pro Bowl eight times and was the 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. His 55 career interceptions speak volumes for the experience he brings. He also helped Green Bay win a Super Bowl.
He is coming off a season where he played just seven games after breaking his collarbone. Woodson insists that he is fully healthy and excited for the team Oakland is creating. Porter will also be playing on a one-year deal signed back in April after he departed from the Denver Broncos.
