NY Jets Rumors: Geno Smith Next Russell Wilson Says Braylon Edwards, Mark Sanchez Criticized as Wide Receiver Likes Rookie for Starter

Braylon Edwards has experience with mobile quarterbacks and by experience, he means training camp. While a member of the Seattle Seahawks for a portion of last season, Edwards got a first-hand look at quarterback Russell Wilson and what he can bring to a football team. Now officially a member of the New York Jets, Edwards is seeing some big similarities between rookie Geno Smith and now second-year quarterback Wilson.

"Russell was a maniac when it came to studying film, breaking down film and asking questions," Edwards said to ESPN New York. "Russell was a beast at that. That's what I see potentially in Geno, how he comes in the huddle, how he asks questions in meetings. He's right there with Mark [Sanchez]."

While Edwards has only been around the rookie for three days, he is already seeing great things out of Smith. The wide receiver recognizes that the team has a true quarterback battle on their hands as Smith continues to learn the offense and look more like a new-age quarterback. Edwards knows what a good mobile quarterback can look like after having worked with Wilson and Colin Kaepernick during his career. He believes Smith is on the right track.

"He's not here happy to be in the NFL, he's not happy to be backing up Mark Sanchez. He's here to start," Edwards said of Smith. "He has that attitude. You can tell a leadership quality about him that's in there. Obviously he's waiting to be more proficient before it comes out."

Edwards is not about to call who is winning the starting job. He has history with Sanchez and told the media that he certainly wishes his teammate well, but ultimately he wants to win games. He wants the quarterback that will win the team games. The wide receiver recognizes that Sanchez has made some mistakes in the past and if the quarterback cannot learn from them, he will be overlooked.

"It's going to be a battle," Edwards said. "It's one where Mark can't make mistakes like he has in the past, things have to be legit with Mark for him to be the starter on opening day. He has a legit guy knocking at the back door."
