The Oklahoma City Thunder had a disappointing end to the season after making it to the NBA finals last year and after losing Kevin Martin to the Minnesota Timberwolves in free agency, the team made moves to try and counter that, bringing Ryan Gomes in on a contract after making a comeback in the league on a one year deal.
According to Pro Basketball Talk, Gomes signed with the team in a reserve role after last playing back for the Clippers, averaging 7.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 27.6 minutes per game. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook need some support after what happened in the playoffs last year and while Gomes isn't a superstar, he is another solid addition to the bench. Gomes played overseas last season and now comes to a team that needs some solid bodies after losing Martin and trading away James Harden last year.
Durant and Kevin Love will continue playing USA basketball despite LeBron James dropping out, according to ESPN. Both players were with the team for the Olympics and the 2010 world championships and head coach Mike Krzyzewski was thrilled to know both would be back.
Gomes last played in the NBA for the Clippers back in the 2012 season after averaging just 2.3 points and 13.3 minutes in 32 games, the team used the amnesty clause on him. Gomes played in Germany after being out of the NBA last season and while he won't be someone that scores 20 points per game, he could add some solid minutes for teams in their rotation and also provide some depth at his position on the cheap, making him attractive to teams with salary cap space problems. Gomes has played for the Timberwolves and Celtics in his career before joining the Clippers.
