Messi Equals Ronaldo's La Liga Record

Lionel Messi equaled the Spanish La Liga's goal record during Saturday's game against Levante just two hours after Cristiano Ronaldo set it.

Earlier that day, Ronaldo headed a goal for Real Madrid against Sporting Gijon in a 3-1 victory, scoring his 41st goal in the league and breaking the La Liga's record of 40 that he set last year. Angel Di Maria assisted Ronaldo's header in the 74th minute.

However, Messi followed right after by successfully scoring two goals against Levante, matching Ronaldo's record of 41. Levante's Jose Barkero scored the first goal by converting a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, but Messi scored two goals in the second half to give Barcelona a 2-1 victory.

The two star players from rivaling teams have been often compared to each other, even before Ronaldo transferred from Manchester United to Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2009. Last season, Messi and Barcelona won the league, but Ronaldo scored the most goals.

"Things are going well, but the most important thing is for the team to do things well, and we're right in there for the league," said Messi.

This season, Barcelona is behind Real Madrid by four points, but Messi and Ronaldo are currently tied in terms of number of goal scored in the league. There are five games left in the league, and another "El Clásico" is scheduled on April 21.
