Green Bay Packers Rumors: Randall Cobb Still Kick Returner Despite Greg Jennings Loss At WR To Vikings, Mike McCarthy Likes Johnathan Franklin or Jordy Nelson To Step Up

The Green Bay Packers had one of the most explosive offenses last season with Aaron Rodgers and receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb, but with Greg Jennings leaving for the Vikings and Cobb stepping up at wideout, a training camp question for the team was whether the young star will continue to return kicks and it appears that answer is yes.

Head coach Mike McCarthy has tried out a number of options in training camp so far, according to ESPN.com, Jeremy Ross, Sam Shields, James Nixon, Loyce Means, Jordy Nelson, Johnathan Franklin and Omarius Hines have had chances and through workouts, Cobb is still the primary option. Cobb has turned into one of the most explosive offensive players in the league and after returning a kick in his opening game he has cemented his status as an elite returner, but many felt that with Jennings gone, it was time to focus on just playing wideout.

Last season Cobb stepped up during injuries and made 80 catches for 954 yards and eight touchdowns and he will get the chance to step up again this season as Jennings is now gone. Cobb has returned three special teams touchdowns in his career, two on punts one on a kick return and last season he was fourth in the conference in punt return average with nearly 10 yards and was sixth in the conference in kick return average. Ross showed some flashes last season, but McCarthy feels that Cobb is the best option after he muffed punts in the game in the playoffs.

"If we were to play a game tomorrow," McCarthy said Wednesday, "Randall would be my returner. The opportunities that these young men had, the preseason will sort that out for us."
