Chiefs Rumors: Alex Smith Called Best NFL QB By Kansas City Coordinator, Team Thinking Playoffs In Training Camp

The Kansas City Chiefs had the number one pick in the NFL draft as the worst team in the league and after taking Eric Fisher with the top selection and trading for quarterback Alex Smith this offseason, the team is ready to turn things around in 2013.

The Chiefs think very highly of Smith, especially offensive coordinator Doug Pederson, who said that the quarterback might be the best player at his position in the NFL. Pederson called him the best in the league over names like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, likely looking at his sharpness with the ball and ability to not turn it over. While Smith was solid last season before being replaced by Colin Kaepernick, many would likely take Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, Drew Brees and Matt Ryan over Smith, but he is KC's man now and they clearly like having him.

The team went nowhere with Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn at quarterback and now they have a legitimate starter and Smith can play without worrying about losing his job. The Chiefs were clearly more confident in Smith than the draft, as they could have taken Ryan Nassib, Matt Barkley or EJ Manuel or Geno Smith with a top pick, but opted for the trade instead before the draft came.

Smith finally turned things around with the 49ers two years ago and after losing his starting job, the Chiefs traded a second round pick and a conditional pick that could be a second rounder as well to get him. Smith led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game before losing to the Giants and he has shown that he can take care of the ball after starting nine games last season and being a former number one overall pick. The Chiefs made a number of moves in the offseason and head coach Andy Reid sees great improvement as they head into 2013.

"There are a lot of great ones, but over time, Alex has proven he can get it done," Pederson told the newspaper. "He's a sharp guy, he brings a wealth of knowledge, he's experienced, he's a proven winner the last couple of years, and he needs a team to embrace him."
