Pat Summitt Retires as Coach of Tennessee

Longtime coach of the Tennessee women's basketball team, Pat Summitt, retired as coach after 38 years with the Lady Vols. Assistant coach Holly Warlick has been promoted to replace Summitt.

Summitt retired one season after revealing last Fall that she was diagnosed with early-onset dementia, Alzheimer type.

"I just felt like it was time for me to step down knowing that Holly was going to be in great hands," said Summitt.

Summitt retires with an astounding 1,098-208 record, 8 NCAA championships, and 16 SEC Championships.

Her legacy also reaches beyond the wins.  Every player under Summitt who completed their eligibility at Tennesee graduated. 74 former players, assistants, and coaches are in the coaching ranks at every level.

"It has been a privilege to make an impact on the lives of 161 women who have worn orange," Summitt said.

According to a White House announcement, Summitt will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

President Barack Obama called Summitt an "inspiration" as coach and praised her for her willingness to "speak so openly and courageously about her battle with Alzheimer's."

Following retirement, Summitt will retain the title of head coach emeritus, assisting with recruitment and consulting the team.  Summitt will also be a vocal spokeswoman in the fight against Alzheimer.
