Minnesota Timberwolves Rumors: Nikola Pekovic Signs Five-Year, $60 Million Deal to Stay

According to Sports Center's Twitter account, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Nikola Pekovic agreed to a five-year deal worth $60 million. IT sounded like both sides couldn't reach an accord, but finally, the Timberwolves gave in to Pekovic's desires for a big paycheck.

Rumors had it that Pekovic's agent, Jeff Schwartz, was seeking a four-year, $48 million deal. That contract would have given Pekovic, on average, a $7 million yearly boost. Pekovic made $5 million in 2012-2013, but played like he was worth more money. Low key because he plays in Minnesota, the center-forward from Montenegro averaged 16.3 points and 8.8 rebounds a game.

Pekovic has shown improvements in his first three seasons in the NBA, which will make his acquisition look genius. He went front 11 games started in 2011, to 35 starts in 12. His field goal percentage got better despite playing more games, connecting on 52 percent of his shots in 2011, then knocking down 56 percent of his shots in 2012. In 2013, the field goal percentage dropped, but he still shot over 50 percent, which is a pretty good ratio.

Of all his strengths, the fact that Pekovic could rebound, on both the offensive and defensive sides of the floor, gives the Timberwolves dominant big men. Signing Pekovic ensures that the T-Wolves have a great paint presence next to Kevin Love. Pekovic was the most valuable free agent left in the market and now the organization ensures they won't have to play against one of their own.

The Timberwolves' fan base should be excited about 2013-2014. With Pekovic back, the team now has three great players with Ricky Rubio running the point. They went 31-51 in 2013, but that record should only get better this upcoming season.
