Yankees’ Pineda Out for Entire Season

New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda will have season ending surgery to repair a labrum tear on his right shoulder.

Pineda had been experiencing pain and weakness on his right shoulder since the end of Spring Training and never appeared in a regular season game.

The Yankees sent Pineda for an MRI which revealed the tear and a second opinion confirmed the necessity for surgery.

The surgery will be performed on Tuesday by Dr. David Altchek, a physician on the New York Mets' staff.

Following the arthroscopic procedure, Pineda will require at least 12 months of recovery which means that the pitcher will be out for the first part of the 2013 season as well.

"For this year, it's a loss," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He was a guy that we were counting on this year. We traded for him, but unfortunately, he's hurt. We're going to have to get him back at some point next year."

Pineda was traded by the Seattle Mariners to the Yankees during the off season for prospects.

Last season, Pineda posted a 9-10 record with a 3.74 ERA and was selected to the All-Star Game in his rookie season for the Mariners.
