The NFL preseason is coming to an end and with injuries starting to pile up around the league, teams are looking for some bargain free agent options to tide them over until players return and after Mark Sanchez was injured against the Giants after Rex Ryan decided to play him, the team is planning to work out John Beck.
According to NFL.com, the team was set to look at Beck and Matt Leinart, but instead Leinart signed with the Bills, leaving Beck as another option. JaMarcus Russell is still on the market as well and the Bills snagged Leinart after EJ Manuel injured his knee and will be out for the preseason and after Kevin Kolb showed concussion symptoms in the last game against the Washington Redskins. The team also acquired Thaddeus Lewis in a trade with the Lions and they already have Jeff Tuel on the roster for the preseason.
Kolb was likely going to be the starter if Manuel wasn't recovered by the start of the season, but now all that is up in the air after the injury, which reports say could be career threatening. Leinart comes in after being a Heisman winner at USC and failing after being the number seven pick with the Cardinals. He played as a backup with the Raiders and Cardinals and depending on what happens with Kolb, he could start in Week 1.
The team also brought in Lewis for depth after he played two years with Cleveland and he started the finals game of the season last year, throwing for over 200 yards and a touchdown with one interception and he could also be the starter depending on how he plays. The team lost Kolb in the first quarter after he was hit in the helmet after scrambling and coach Doug Marrone took him out.
The Bills originally had Tarvaris Jackson on the roster, but they released him and now they are in a tough spot after Kolb and Manuel were injured. Kolb had already injured his knee in the preseason and he also dealt with injuries last year while with the Cardinals. The Jets were planning to look at Leinart, but now they will stick with looking at John Beck and possibly Jimmy Clausen, who may be released according to reports from around the league.
Beck has been a backup throughout his career and Clausen was drafted right before Cam Newton and the team never gave him a chance to start after he was a second round pick. Mark Sanchez was injured in the fourth quarter against the Giants and Rex Ryan has been ripped for that around the media. Clausen could end up being released after not playing since back in 2010 and he has gone just 1-9 as a starter and the team could keep just Newton and Derek Anderson.
