The Women's Singles tournament at the 2013 U.S. Open is now entering the third round of action. Find out who remains alive as somebody will attempt to beat out Serena Williams, the 2012 defending champion. Here is the Women's Singles bracket entering Friday's matches.
There are only 32 players remaining. This is the first meeting between seeded players and there will be a few closely ranked stars facing off. The No. 1 seed, Williams, is still facing unseeded players. She faces Yaroslava Shvedova from Kazahkstan. Williams has the 2-0 advantage in their career matches.
If Williams wins, she has the chance of facing off against who many consider her future successor in American Women's Singles, Sloane Stephens (15). However, Stephens will face off against the No. 23 seed, Jamie Hampton. Stephens' popularity is growing and she played better in the second round after suffering a scare in the first round of the tournament.
Now, let's focus on the top seeded players in the tournament.
Still alive and well and among the remaining 32 women are Victoria Azarenka (2), Agnieszka Radwanska (3), Na Li (5), Caroline Wozniacki (6), Petra Kvitova (7), Angelique Kerber (8), and Jelena Jankovic (9). They have been able to avoid any upsets early on in the rounds of this tournament, unlike Wimbledon where Azarenka and then, No. 3 Maria Sharapove were bounced in the second round of the tournament.
Azarenka has been on a role so far in the tournament. After holding Dinah Pfizenmajer to double bagels in the first round, Azarenka breezed past Aleksandra Wozniak in her second round meeting, only losing four games.
