NASCAR driver Eric McClure is in stable condition after a hospitalization that resulted from a crash Saturday during the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.
McClure, the 33-year-old driver of the No. 14 Hefty/Reynolds Wrap Toyota, is "stable and alert," according to a team statement Sunday afternoon, and is undergoing tests at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. Exact information about his injuries sustained in the wreck has not been released.
Eric McClure's family released a statement on Sunday through the team publicist Emily Brandt to let NASCAR fans know his condition.
"McClure and his family would like to express their thanks to the NASCAR community for their thoughts, support and concern," the statement said.
McClure's wife, Miranda, also posted on his personal Facebook page saying the family is ''so thankful that he survived. It is nothing short of a miracle that he was not hurt more than he is.''
The accident, caught on video, happened after McClure skidded in a chain-reaction crash that caused him to hit an inside wall head-on. Ten cars were involved in the wreck after Kevin Harvick was pushed from Michael Annett, which resulted in six cars wrecked so badly that they couldn't finish the race. McClure was the only driver injured and was rushed to the hospital by helicopter.
