The New York Giants are coming into Week 2 in a very bad spot, as they gave up the ball six different times against the Dallas Cowboys to open the season and with David Wilson's fumbling issues, the running back position is a mess and now backup Da'Rel Scott has injured his knee in practice.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Daily News is reporting that Scott injured his knee in practice on Wednesday and while the seriousness of the injury is not known, it puts the Giants in a more difficult spot as they try to stop themselves from going 0-2 with a loss to the Broncos on Sunday. Scott contributed to the turnovers against the Cowboys, as he let a ball bounce of his hands as the Giants were travelling down the field to try and win the game and naturally it went right to cornerback Brandon Carr and the play resulted in a touchdown.
Even before Scott was injured, the team worked out Brandon Jacobs, Willis McGahee and Beanie Wells, deciding to sign Jacobs since he already knows the playbook and offense fairly well after winning two Super Bowls with the team. Wilson came into the season as a fantasy stud type player, as he has explosive speed and skills, but his fumbling now could be the end of him being a productive player. Last season he had some fantastic moments, but last year he started the same way as he did in 2013: fumbling against the Cowboys.
The Giants want to run the ball more consistently this season and after losing Andre Brown to an injury in the preseason they now have to rethink their entire style of play. Brown also broke his leg last season and he will now be out until at least Week 8 and with Scott getting injured, if it is serious, any thoughts of him being a sleeper fantasy option go out the window. The Giants liked Scott as a late round draft pick two years ago and he put up solid stats in relief on Sunday, rushing for over 20 yards and making five catches for 51 yards, but he didn't make it into the endzone.
Wilson and Scott are ahead of Michael Cox on the depth chart and since he is a rookie, it is likely that Jacobs will be the top back against the Broncos. Peyton Manning and Denver carved up the Baltimore Ravens for 49 points on Thursday and with the Giants defense still giving up plenty of yards, they could be in for a long day against Denver, especially if they can't run the ball. The team let veteran running back Ahmad Bradshaw go in free agency to the Colts and now they are lacking at the position.
Tom Coughlin has called out Wilson and while the Giants haven't said that they won't use him against the Broncos, he could end up not getting as many touches as a starter might expect. The team sees Wilson as an explosive back out of the backfield, but if he can't hang onto the ball, the team will have issues playing him in games at crucial points and that could hamper the offense greatly. Scott is a definite sit this week.
