Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie has been suspended for four games by Major League Baseball, stemming from an incident that occurred on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
According to a report by Toronto-based writer John Lott of the National Post, Lawrie will appeal the suspension, which will allow him to be in the lineup on Wednesday when the Blue Jays host the New York Yankees.
In the ninth inning of Tuesday's game, Lawrie was called out by home plate umpire Bill Miller, who called the last two strikes after Lawrie had started toward first base, believing that he had been walked by Rays pitcher Fernando Rodney. After learning of the controversial call, Miller slammed his helmet down in Miller's direction, and it bounced up and struck the umpire on the leg.
The 22-year-old native of British Columbia is hitting .289 this season with three home runs and 17 RBI. He hit .293 with nine homers and 25 RBI last season, making his major league debut for the Blue Jays.
Toronto (19-18, fourth in American League East) hosts the Yankees (20-16, third in AL East) in the first game of a two-game series on Wednesday night at Rogers Center. Game time is 7:07 p.m. ET.
