Minor League Home Run Derby to take Place on Aircraft Carrier

The single-A South Atlantic League is taking its name serious. Instead of having their homerun derby in a traditional setting (a baseball stadium) they are moving the event to the Atlantic Ocean, the namesake of their league.

The first round of the league's homerun derby will take place June 18 aboard the USS Yorktown, a World War II aircraft carrier stationed in Charleston Harbor, S.C.

The league's 10 best sluggers will take their hacks on the deck of the ship. Without any walls, the logistics of the derby could pose problems. To alleviate this the US Coast Guard will judge the distance that each ball hit travels from the ship by using a crew of paid jetskiers and kayakers to collect balls from the water.

The top four players from the first round of the derby on the USS Yorktown will return to solid ground to complete the contest. The final round will be held at the Charleston RiverDogs' Riley Park on June 19.

This is not the first sporting event to take place on an aircraft carrier. North Carolina and Michigan State played a men's basketball game aboard the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego, Ca. last year in the inaugural Carrier Classic.
