Just how did we get to this mess? Well, this rivalry started during the regular season. Both teams went head-to-head during the regular season. They played plenty of close games and though the Pirates won the series, the Cardinals won the division. The Cardinals finished with a 97-65 record and the Pirates were three games behind them with a 94-68 record.
Right now, Pirates could care less about the regular season. Their team is one game away from advancing to the second round of the postseason. Their rookie Gerrit Cole might have a lot of pressure on his shoulders, but he did a great job in Game 2, getting the Pirates back in the series, tying things 1-1. He will be under similar circumstances, but this time, the Pirates are not trailing the series.
Cole will be on the road at Busch Stadium where he won Game 2. He was a better pitcher on the road, winning four of his seven starts, posting a 2.38 ERA after allowing 12 earned runs in 45.1 innings pitched. These numbers were better than his home numbers where Cole posted a 3.75 ERA, allowing 30 earned runs in 72 innings pitched.
Another pitcher who has done a great job at Busch Stadium is Adam Wainwright, the Game 5 starter, who won the series opener. He posted a 2.53 ERA in 17 starts at home, which was almost a run lower than his road ERA.
Expect Cardinal fans to be into this one. They do not want to watch their team lose at home, especially to the division rival Pirates. The Cardinals will try to score a victory. They will try to make their seventh NLCS appearance since 2000.
