Spurs' Playoff Success Bad For NBA?

The San Antonio Spurs are on a roll. They are winners of 18 straight and have yet to lose in the playoffs. Sunday night they advanced to the Western Conference Finals, but if they win, will people watch them play in the Finals?

The Spurs last played in the NBA Finals in 2007 against a younger Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 2007 Finals had a 6.2 television rating, the worst ever. Prior to that, in 2003 the Spurs faced off against the New Jersey Nets and their TV rating was 6.5.Those are the Spurs' last two championships that few bothered to watch.

To be honest, I watched the series against the Los Angeles Clippers because of the Clippers. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin are great young stars and make a great duo. It felt like anything could have happened in a Clippers game, high flying dunks and incredible comebacks. Their stock definitely went up after their 24 point comeback against the Memphis Grizzlies in Round 1 of the playoffs.

No disrespect to the Spurs, but their playing style lacks blockbuster dunks and, although they have skilled players, they do not have bankable draws like James or Kobe Bryant. I know a lot Knicks fans who can sit through an Oklahoma City Thunder game because Kevin Durant has one of the sweetest jumpers in the NBA, Russell Westbrook can light up the scoreboard and Serge Ibaka's blocks land 10 rows deep in the stands.

The Lakers have Bryant. Miami has two of the best players in the NBA. The Celtics are the Celtics. These teams play in large markets and have players worth watching, whether people hate them or not.

Picture a Finals with San Antonio Spurs against the Indiana Pacers. That could be distrastrous for the NBA Finals' TV ratings. The Pacers have one of themost loyal fan bases in the world. but the Indiana Pacers fan base does not attract the same crowd as a Miami Heat team.

A 6.2 TV rating means that just over nine million people were watching. In the 1998 NBA Finals when the Bulls faced off against the Utah Jazz the TV ratings was 18.7, the highest rating ever for a Finals series.

The Spurs have won the four Finals series they have played in, but all of them are in the top 10 worst TV ratings list for a championship series. They played against the Detroit Pistons in 2005 (8.2) and in 1999 against the New York Knicks (11.3). Pretty sure David Stern might want somebody to step up against the Spurs before they end up in the Finals.
