Washington Redskins Trade Rumors: Did St. Louis Rams Make Mistake With Robert Griffin III Draft Deal? Sam Bradford Injury Makes It Interesting

The St. Louis Rams pulled off a big trade before the draft in 2012 to send the number two overall selection to the Washington Redskins for a package of picks that enabled the Skins to draft Robert Griffin III, but now that Sam Bradford has been lost for the season with a torn ACL, did the Rams make the right choice?

It's easy to look at it now with Griffin healthy and the Rams sputtering after losing their starting quarterback suddenly in the middle of the season to say that St. Louis was wrong for trading the pick and sticking with Bradford, but right now that alternative seems pretty good. Bradford was in his fourth season and is entering that point where the team has to decide whether to stick with you long term and while the Rams appeared to do that with the trade, giving up the right to select Griffin or Luck, now with the injury and his contract, things could be a bit uncertain. Griffin had ACL surgery on his knee, but he is recovering nicely from that and he has returned to form and watching him play last year there has to be someone in the Rams front office wondering what if.

The Rams received the sixth overall pick in the 2012 draft and the 39th overall, as well as a first-round pick in 2013 and then another in 2014, a big haul, but was it worth giving up on Griffin? The Rams selected Tavon Austin with their draft pick in 2013 and took Michael Brockers, Janoris Jenkins and Alec Ogletree and while it's still too early to tell about how they will turn out, it's not as if the defense has been lights out and now that Bradford is gone, the Rams are starting Kellen Clemens and even thought about Tim Tebow before calling Brett Favre. Yeah, Griffin sounds better than that.

While it's easy to look back now and say Griffin would be the better choice, it really seems like he would have been due to the dynamic way he plays. Bradford is very solid and he was having a nice season with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions before getting injured, but he missed games in 2011 and he threw for 13 interceptions last season. Bradford was completing just over 60 percent of his passes this season, but that was his first that high since his rookie season. All I'm saying is the Rams had a tough choice with trading that pick.
