The best just keeping getting better.
The Texas Rangers, who sport the AL's best record, reached a minor league deal with Roy Oswalt, a three-time All-Star and a pitcher who has finished in the top five in NL Cy Young voting five times. The deal is worth $5 million, $4 million guaranteed and an additional $1 million in incentives if Oswalt makes a certain amount of starts.
Oswalt will join Triple-A Round Rock and is expected to make his first start on Saturday. He should be able to join the Rangers in the matter of a few weeks. The timing is perfect for the Rangers, who recently placed starter Neftali Feliz on the disabled list.
Oswalt is an 11-year major league veteran. He has a career 159-93 record with a 3.21 ERA in 339 games. Last year with the Phillies he went 9-10 with a 3.21 ERA in 23 starts. He was placed on the disabled list twice with lower back injuries and accumulated just 139 innings pitched, his lowest total since 2003.
Oswalt is no longer the ace that he formerly was, and there is no guarantee his body will hold up, but he does present a solid addition to a formable rotation that includes Japanese sensation Yu Darvish.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies were also interested in signing Oswalt. The Phillies and Dodgers recently suffered major injuries in their rotation, placing Ted Lilly and Roy Halladay respectively on the DL. But Oswalt's first choice was Texas all along. This will mark the first time Oswalt has pitched in the American League. He has spent his entire career with the Astros and Phillies.
