It seems to be growing more and more likely that Clint Dempsey has played his final match for Fulham, the only English Premier team he has ever known.
Dempsey has made no secret about it that he would like to play in the Champions League, which would indicate his desire to transfer to another club. And other squads would certainly be interested in adding the explosiveness that the 29-year-old American could bring.
Dempsey, arguably the most successful American to ever play in the EPL, is coming off a record-breaking season. The Texan native scored 17 goals in league play, the most ever by an American. That put him forth in the league for the most goals scored. Only Robin van Persie of Arsenal (31), Wayne Rooney of Manchester United (27), and Sergio Aguero of Manchester City (23) scored more. In total, Dempsey tallied 23 goals in all competitions.
Dempsey was selected eighth overall in the 2004 MLS Draft by the New England Revolution and would go on to win Rookie of the Year Honors. He played with the Revolution for three seasons before joining Fulham after the club offered a $4 million transfer fee, then the largest amount ever offered for an MLS player.
In his career with Fulham he has scored 50 EPL goals, becoming the first American to do so. In all competitions, he has recorded 60 goals in 225 games.
Dempsey's contract with Fulham expires after next season. The club could choose to sell the striker to another team instead of losing him in a year without recouping anything financially. Although respectful of his deal with Fulham, and grateful for what the club has done for him, it is clear Dempsey would like to take on another challenge.
"The transfer window is open until Aug. 31. It's no secret that I would like to play Champions League one day in my career," Dempsey said Tuesday. "If it's meant to be, it will be."
He has the support of his national team coach as well. Jurgen Klinsmann knows that Dempsey has the right idea in mind. "His goal is the right goal," the coach said last week. "If he has the opportunity to go a Champions League team, that's the creme de la creme in the world of club soccer, then you've got to do that."
For now Dempsey's focus will be on the U.S. national team. They play two more exhibitions before beginning World Cup qualifying. Dempsey has recovered from a groin injury and is in the process of getting in match shape.
