The San Francisco 49ers return to the Superdome for the first time since playing in the 2013 Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens. They fell on the wrong side of history after failed comeback attempt left the Ravens as Super Bowl champions. The 49ers are a different team than last year and are hoping to bounce back against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
The 49ers have sputtered in recent weeks. They lost at home to the Carolina Panthers in a frustrating 10-9 beat down. The lack of scoring simply will not work against the Saints who have a high-powered offense looking to do some damage. New Orleans is 5-0 at home, owning teams 176-75 with the home-crowd advantage. The Saints are coming off a game where they recorded a record-breaking 40 first downs and 625 yards of total offense against the Dallas Cowboys.
Quarterback Drew Brees is rotating on all cylinders. Against Dallas he threw for 392 yards while tossing four touchdowns and no interceptions. He has 18 touchdowns and just two interceptions while playing at home this season as the Saints average 463.6 yards per game while playing in New Orleans.
The 49ers are allowing 17.2 points per game this season which could be a big issue going up against the high-powered offense of the Saints. But, their offense might be worse. The team is coming off a game where they totaled just 151 yards of offense against the Panthers while Colin Kaepernick tossed for just 91 yards and an interception while being sacked six times.
San Francisco could also be without some big time players this week. Vernon Davis may not be in the lineup after suffering a concussion. Michael Crabtree may not be available either after getting pumped up to the 53-man roster.
The Superdome certainly has some bad memories for the 49ers, but the team is in desperate need of a bounce-back game. Meanwhile, New Orleans just hopes to keep the momentum in their favor.
