The Seattle Mariners pulled off arguably the biggest move of the MLB offseason by locking up Robinson Cano to a 10-year contract for over $200 million and now that the deal has gone down, reports say the M's are working on more trades and deals and some names that have already been mentioned includes David Price, Matt Kemp, Carlos Gonzalez, Ryan Braun or Giancarlo Stanton.
The Mariners reportedly had talks break down with Cano on Friday morning, but that changed when the team showed it was willing to meet his demands of a 10-year deal and it ended up at $240 million and now the team feels it is close to the playoffs and more moves could be coming. Lookout Landing reported that the Rays want Taijuan Walker in any deal for Price and that could be tough, as he is considered one of the best prospects in baseball and that would be a huge loss for the Mariners. Price is going to get traded and a number of teams are interested and Seattle wouldn't mind adding him to a rotation that already includes Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma, who was a Cy Young finalist this season.
Matt Kemp has been mentioned as a name that is dangling out there are the Boston Red Sox appear to be a team in the mix, while the Rockies and Brewers have said they are not trading their stars, but that could change if someone like Walker was involved. The Mariners deal for Cano makes little sense if they aren't willing to add another player and the team reportedly is also looking at Mike Napoli, Nelson Cruz as well as Carlos Beltran and Shin-Soo Choo in free agency and the trades are also very possible.
Andre Ethier is a name that has continued to come up and so have Stanton and Braun, even though their teams likely want to keep them. Bartolo Colon is an option for the Mariners as well and while they would love Price, they really do not want to give up Walker and neither do the fans. Napoli is a solid option after the way he played last season with the Red Sox and now with Cano in the fold, other free agent may be willing to come to Seattle.
The Yankees remained steadfast that they did not want to go for that length of a contract and that is why the team allowed Cano to leave. Jay-Z got a win for his boy, but if the Mariners don't continue adding players and pieces, it might all be for nothing.
