Manchester United Transfer News: Kagawa Deal Agreed; Baines or Alba for Ferguson

After missing out on Eden Hazard, Manchester United have gone into overdrive, looking to bring in the best possible players to improve their squad.

Shinji Kagawa has long been linked with a move to United and the Japanese international's expected move was confirmed by United on Tuesday.

After missing out on Hazard, Sir Alex Ferguson made Kagawa his top priority and the classy playmaker will be sure to be a big hit at the red-half of Manchester next season after United agreed terms with German champions Borussia Dortmund.

United will reportedly pay $26 million for Kagawa's signature. The deal is expected to cost United an initial $18 million, rising to $26 million as add ons.

"Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has agreed terms with both Borussia Dortmund and Shinji Kagawa for his transfer to the club," United said in a statement.

"The deal is subject only to the player medical and obtaining a UK work permit. These conditions are anticipated to be completed by the end of June.

"Further details will be announced in due course."

Rio Ferdinand was quick to laud the signing on Twitter. "Welcome to Shinji Kagawa for his transfer to Man Utd. Here's to a successful time here bro!"

Ferguson will now look to fill the gap at leftback. Ferguson is keen to give Patrice Evra some competition as well as find someone who can replace the French international in a couple of years.

Both Valencia's Jordi Alba and Everton's Leighton Baines have been heavily linked. United have been put off by the $30 million asking price for Baines and have turned their attention on Alba. According to several reports, the Red Devils are planning a cash-plus-player deal. United are willing to offer Anderson and cash to Valencia to acquire the services of the former Barcelona trainee.

However, Barcelona are also interested to bring back Alba to Catalunya as a replacement for Eric Abidal.

Ferdinand, who said on Monday he will still support England at the Euros despite being snubbed, is impressed by Benfica midfielder Axel Witsel. The Manchester United defender tweeted during Belgium's friendly against England: "For me, Witsel will be a top player within a few years."

Witsel had a brilliant campaign for Benfica last year. Another Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, who impressed in the Champions League against United, looks unlikely to move to Manchester after United's decision to sign Kagawa.

Meanwhile, United are set to lose out on Udinese enforcer Kwado Asamoah. According to talkSPORT Juventus, are in pole position to land the highly-coveted 23-year-old.

The former Premier League Champions' chase for Mats Hummels also ended after the Dortmund defender signed a new five-year deal to stay with the German champions.

"As soon as the club approached me and asked if I would like to extend, I knew immediately that I want to continue being part of this team, which is so successful and is so much fun to be in," Hummels said.

United are hoping to receive at least $8 million for Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian striker has admitted his time with Man U is over and has been linked with a move to cash-rich Paris St Germain. Former club Bayer Leverkusen recently pulled out of the race to sign Berbatov, after refusing to pay a transfer fee.
