Phillies vs. Dodgers: Papelbon Blasts Ump After Losing Game

Jonathan Papelbon was not pleased with the umpiring after winding up as the losing pitcher Monday night, and he was sure to let everyone know about it.

Entering a tie game between the Phillies and Dodgers in the top of the ninth, Papelbon gave up a triple to right-center off the bat of Dee Gordon, who would eventually come around to score the game-winning run. The triple came just one pitch after Papelbon thought he had struck Gordon out. The fourth pitch of the at-bat, according to the closer, should have been called strike three, but wasn't.

Adding to his displeasure was news that the umpire, D.J. Reyburn, was a minor league ump who was filling in for the night. Papelbon didn't mince words aboutwhat he thought of Reyburn's performance.

"I thought he sucked," Papelbon said, "he probably needs to go back to Triple-A. You're up in the big leagues to do a good job and when you don't do a good job you should be demoted or fired. It's just like anybody's job. If I don't do my job, I go down to Triple-A. There's no room for that up here."

Reyburn had a tough night, facing criticism on both sides and ejected Dodgers manager Don Mattingly and bench coach Trey Hillman earlier in the game.

Ronald Belisario got the win for the Dodgers after pitching a scoreless ninth. Elian Herrera got the go-ahead RBI after hitting a single of Papelbon that scored Gordon. Herrera was in the minor leagues for nine years before being called up this season to replace the injured Juan Uribe. He is hitting .308 in 19 games, having started at third base, second base and centerfield.

"I really love this game," said Herrera, "I would have liked to have been here before, but that's how it works. I just want to be in the lineup. It doesn't matter where I play."

Clayton Kershaw, the Dodgers starter and reigning NL Cy Young winner, is winless in his last three starts. The Phillies have lost three consecutive games to fall back to .500.
