The Dallas Stars added a goaltending prospect on Tuesday when they signed Swedish star Christopher Nihlstorp to a one-year contract.
The 28-year-old Nihlstorp just completed his second season with Farjestads BK Karlstad of the Swedish Elite League, posting a .923 save percentage and a 2.04 goals-against average while backstopping Fajrestads to the second round of the playoffs. Nihlstorp was also a member of the Swedish national team that played at last month's IIHF World Championship, although he did not see any game action, as recent Anaheim Ducks signee Viktor Fasth and Buffalo Sabres netminder Jhonas Enroth handled the goaltending duties for the host Swedes.
Nihlstorp first played in the Elite League as a teenager, getting a handful of appearances with Malmo IF in the 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons before developing himself further in the country's minor league HockeyAllsvenskan. Since returning to the Elite League with Rogle Angelholm in 2008-09, his save percentage and goals-against average have improved every year, leading to his signing with the Stars.
Dallas definitely has room for another goaltending prospect. Richard Bachman, due to be resigned as a restricted free agent, took his place this season as the primary backup to Kari Lehtonen, leaving Jack Campbell and Tyler Beskorowany as the team's only two prospects in goal. Given that the Stars have both an AHL team (Texas Stars) and an ECHL team (Idaho Steelheads) all to themselves for developing prospects, there are certainly opportunities for the team to develop a goalie. The need certainly wasn't urgent, as Campbell - the team's first-round pick in 2010 - is seen as the goaltender of the future. However, the signing was certainly an excellent fit.
