Michael Vick Free Agency Rumors: Philadelphia Eagles QB Not Returning as Starter, Chip Kelly Praises Nick Foles as Future of Franchise

Michael Vick is starting to become well-aware that he will be the odd man out in Philadelphia come the 2014 season. The quarterback is finishing a one-year contract after a season that saw him lose his starting job to backup Nick Foles following a hamstring injury. As Chip Kelly announces plans to build around Foles, Vick is mulling his future.

Vick has made it clear that he still desires to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. He predicted he still has a few years left in the tank to be a leader for a team. However, destined for free agency, that team will likely not be the Philadelphia Eagles. The quarterback suffered a hamstring injury midway through 2013. Foles ended up replacing his for the long-term and is now pegged as the franchise player.

"It's hard to sum up my time here. Everything has been so surreal and has happened so abruptly," Vick said, via Philadelphia Magazine. "The thing I do know is I appreciate the fans, I appreciate this organization, I appreciate the relationships and the teammates I've been able to [have] in this locker room. There's a lot of guys in here I'll always keep in contact with and I'll consider my brothers."

Chip Kelly praised the veteran for what he has brought the team. The head coach said it was certainly unfortunate that Vick got injured when he did, but he praised the quarterback for how professional he handled the situation.

Vick has not ruled out a return to the Eagles. He is aware that it would be as a backup role and not a starting job, something he plans on searching for. But, if all else fails he will likely return to the Eagles.

Meanwhile, Kelly has now set his focus on the future and that is all Foles. In his season-ending interview with the media, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Kelly plans to build the offense around Foles in 2014. His 27:2 touchdown-to-interception ratio impressed many during his breakout season. The head coach went as far as to say, "Nick is the guy."

While Kelly is busy praising Foles, the quarterback is trying to read too much into it. Foles told reporters that he trying not to focus on labels heading into next season and is simply looking to capitalize off a strong year.

"A franchise QB is the one who's going to go to work every single day, and when it's game day, he's got to play well," Foles said. "He's also got to be a leader. He's got to be a guy the team looks to and the city looks to. You've got to be consistent. I've never looked at a label as meaningful. It just means someone has your back and has that respect. But for me personally, I'm going to continue to be who I am."

If Foles can follow up his breakout 2013 with an even stronger 2014, franchise will be a word he hears a lot. Vick could easily return as the backup while rookie Matt Barkley sits in third string.
