Michael has no doubts about his talents. After getting replaced midway through the 2013 season, the current Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is set on returning as a starter for the 2014 season. Vick has wrapped up his fifth season in Philadelphia and as he enters free agency this offseason, he only intends to play for a team where he can start.
While speaking at the Super Media Center (via NFL.com), Vick said "absolutely" when asked if he plans on starting for a team next season. Vick does not see himself doing anything else. Reaching the age of 34 with terrible injury history, Vick looks more poised for a backup role, but he intends to search for a starting job first and foremost before thinking of any backup option.
"I don't want to jump the gun," Vick said, via CSNPhilly.com. "I want to make sure I put myself in the best possible situation. Ultimately, the goal is to win football games and and to try to compete in the Super Bowl one day. Being on the back end of my career, the back nine as I call, I've just got to make the right decision right now and make sure I do it the right way."
If Vick is going to be a starting quarterback, it will not be with the Philadelphia Eagles. The quarterback suffered a hamstring injury last season, causing him to be replaced by Nick Foles who turned out to be an excellent option and the future starter for the Eagles next season. So if he is not re-joining the Eagles next season, where could Vick land?
NFL.com brings up the option of the New York Jets. That is certainly an intriguing option for Vick. General manager John Idzik is not committed to Geno Smith as the future starter of the team. They are also not sold on Mark Sanchez being the best option going forward. Vick could certainly step in and at least contend for the job. He is not ruling that out.
"I don't know," Vick said. "Who knows? What I am is really excited about the opportunity to play again in 2014 and that's what's important."
Several other teams will be looking for a starting quarterback that could take a second glance at Vick. The Oakland Raiders are desperate to figure out their quarterback carousel. Terrelle Pryor and Matt McGloin both had their struggles and Vick could be an upgrade. The Cleveland Browns are other option. Brandon Weeden is expected to be released and Vick could step right in to their offense and provide a much-needed spark.
If all else fails, Vick is open to returning to Philadelphia as a backup quarterback. The veteran believes he has plenty left to give a team, but simply just wants to play in 2014.
