The NHL trade deadline is here and rumors are flying with names like Thomas Vanek, Mike Cammalleri, Paul Stastny, Marian Gaborik and Martin Brodeur possibly getting traded and teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings could be in the mix.
Ryan Callahan and Ryan Kessler are getting plenty of attention on the market, while Ryan Miller and Roberto Luongo were two of the biggest names to move already in deals. Vanek is one of the top names on the market and this comes after he was originally traded from the Sabres to the Islanders and now he could get traded again by the Islanders. Garth Snow has been getting pressure to get some more picks and young prospects and with John Tavares out for the season after getting injured at the Olympics, moving Vanek is a smart thing.
ESPN.com reports that Vanek is getting attention from the Boston Bruins, LA Kings and the Penguins and those could be options for Snow at the deadline. This season Vanek has been solid for the Islanders, as he has 21 goals and 32 assists with 53 points and heading into the deadline he was a name that got mentioned over many others and he could be a huge snag for teams heading into the playoffs. Vanek ranks in the top 25 in scoring and the Islanders are going nowhere and this comes after the team already picked up multiple draft picks in the deal for Andrew MacDonald.
Vanek and Cammalleri along with Stastny and Gaborik all could be moving at the deadline and teams like the Blackhawks, Penguins and Red Wings are looking to stock up ahead of the playoffs. The Penguins are in on Kesler and they also could be an option for Vanek, while the Kings right now are the favorites according to CBS Sports. The Bruins are also looking to load up and they could go after someone like Gaborik as well. The deadline should have a flurry of moves as the time nears and teams like the Penguins and the Blackhawks could pull off big ones.
Apart from Luongo and Miller, the deadline has seen some notable moves, including the Ducks trading away Viktor Fasth and Dustin Penner to the Caps and Oilers for draft picks, while they also picked up Stephane Robidas and other players that moved already includes Mike Weaver and Ilya Bryzgalov. Ryan Callahan is another name to watch, as the Rangers are working on an extension with him and right now the two asides are far apart.
Callahan wants a long term deal and while he lowered his demands from seven years to six, the two sides are still apart on money. The Rangers offered $6 million and Callahan wants more than that and since he is set to be a free agent, the team has to considered trading him. Rumors of a Martin St. Louis deal are on the table, while the Canucks have Ryan Kesler and they have been getting plenty of attention for him.
