Harry Redknapp parted ways with Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday after a successful four-year spell.
Redknapp vehemently denied his time at White Hart Lane was over on Tuesday, but left the club after failing to come to a new contract agreement. Redknapp had only one year remaining on his contract and felt he deserved a new long term deal.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, however, felt otherwise after being unimpressed by Tottenham's slump at the end of the season. In position to challenge for the title in February, Spurs let slip a ten point lead to fourth-placed Arsenal, which saw their arch-rivals finish third. Spurs missed out on the Champions League for next season after Chelsea won the title against Bayern Munich.
Everton manager David Moyes is understood to be the first-choice to replace Redknapp, although the Toffees said they have not had any approach from Spurs as yet. Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez is also in the fray.
Moyes has just one year remaining on his contract and could be tempted to move to white Hart Lane, where he will be given more funds to work with. Moyes has received high praise for the way he has kept Everton in the top half of the table consistently for multiple seasons, despite working on an extremely small budget.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Spurs and am proud of my achievements," Redknapp said on Tottenham's website.
"I have had a fantastic four years with the club; at times the football has been breathtaking. I am sad to be leaving but wish to thank the players, staff and fans for their terrific support during my time there."
After taking over in October 2008, with Tottenham flirting with relegation, Redknapp guided the club to eighth that season, before securing Champions League in the next. Tottenham's style of play under the Englishman received much praise with the likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric flourishing under his style of play.
Redknapp was left frustrated after his request for a new four year deal was turned down by Levy, who felt the 65-year-old lost the plot after speculation surrounding his appointment as England manager.
Redknapp was overlooked for the England coach's job with Roy Hodgson being preferred and Spurs ended up a disappointing fourth. Redknapp reportedly also had a frosty relationship with Levy ever since taking over at White Hart Lane.
"This is not a decision the Board and I have taken lightly," Levy said. "Harry arrived at the club at a time when his experience and approach was exactly what was needed.
"This decision in no way detracts from the excellent work Harry has done during his time with the club and I should like to thank him for his achievements and contribution. Harry will always be welcome at the Lane."
Tottenham now face a fight on their hands to convince the likes of Modric, Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart about the club's ambitions, as the players were reportedly keen on Redknapp staying.
