If there is anything a baseball does not want to hear it is that a top player has elbow pain. The severity of Andrus' injury is unknown at the moment, but drawing concerns from the coaching staff. Could the team make a move for help at the position before Opening Day?
According to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Andrus is set to see a team doctor and will likely be out the next few games. Team officials stress there is nothing to worry about with the injury, but elbow issues could be the sign of something to come and if Andrus is out for a lengthy period of time, the Rangers have some issues. The shortstop is average offensively, but is one of the better defensive players in baseball. While the Rangers have depth in Jurickson Profar, the team could make a move for someone else.
Naturally, baseball sources were quick to jump on the Jimmy Rollins trade as an option. The Philadelphia Phillies are not happy with their star shortstop and have sent the veteran a message of step up as a leader or leave. Rollins has a no-trade clause in his contract that he is highly unlikely to waive, even for a potential contending team like the Rangers. Rollins wants the franchise record for career hits, so do not expect him to jump ship over to Texas if the team were to call. Rollins name will continue to come up with every shortstop injury that happens in baseball this season.
The Rangers would be smart to inquire about Stephen Drew, the best available free agent on the market. Drew declined a qualifying offer from the Boston Red Sox and now sits without a team after contract demands quieted interest around him. The Rangers have no issues spending money and could give Drew the contract he prefers. However, Texas will not do so unless they think Andrus could be out for the long-term.
The Rangers have flexibility. An injury to Andrus without a proper replacement could derail their season. A decision on the shortstop should come quickly and until then Profar will be the replacement instead of switching him to second base. Profar is a safe bet, but not one for the entire season.
