Walcott Inspires England to Thrilling Win Over Sweden

Super sub Theo Walcott scored one and assisted the other, to give England a thrilling 3-2 win over Sweden in a Euro 2012 Group D clash in Kiev.

Walcott netted the equaliser after England dramatically went down 2-1, thanks to Sweden's 34-year-old defender Olof Mellberg. The Arsenal winger then brilliantly set up Danny Welbeck for the winner.

England now have four points and need just a draw in their final match against Ukraine. France also have four points and lead the group on goal difference. Ukraine are on three points while Sweden have zero and are out of the competition.

The first half was a cagey affair with both teams hardly creating any chances in front of goal. The only real moment of the opening half came via England's first goal. Steven Gerrard was again the provider, his cross from the right, was wonderfully headed in by Andy Carroll in the 23rd minute, immediately justifying coach Roy Hodgson's decision to start him.

The rest of the half petered out and nobody would have expected the drama that was to follow in the second 45. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had a disappointing game, stood up a ball into the England half, after his 30-yard freekick rebounded back to him, and found Olof Mellberg all alone. His header was partly saved by goalkeeper Joe Hart and despite Glen Johnson's best efforts to keep the ball out, it went in.

Mellberg again rose above the non-existent England defense to head in his second off a nice freekick from Sebastian Larsson.

Hodgson immediately replaced the ineffective James Milner for Theo Walcott and it turned out to be a masterstroke. Walcott netted the equaliser with a wickedly dipping strike from outside the box. Goalkeeper Andreas Isakkson was left unsighted and could only watch the shot go past him. Walcott was probably aided by a slight deflection off Larsson as well.

The Arsenal man, with his confidence up, then made a darting run through the Sweden defence and sent in a brilliant cross, which was wonderfully back-heeled by Welbeck past the goalkeeper.

"That was a big win for us, not just for me but for the team," Walcott told BBC after the match. "We felt from the first game we wanted to pick it up a bit more offensively and to score three goals is the main thing.

"It's always nice to come off the bench and show what you can do.

"I've obviously been disappointed that I haven't played, but I've been training hard and it's not about the starting line-up, it's a whole squad thing.

"I was sharp warming up and you need to be sharp on the pitch because at this level it's really, really tough. To make my first appearance in such a high-profile arena means so much because it's been a long time waiting."

Hodgson hailed Walcott's performance. "I was really pleased with the performance of the front players, and Theo Walcott's contribution was enormous. To come on as a substitute, score and then set up the winner means he'll be very happy. I believe in Theo -- he's a good player with real quality. "I've only been working with these players for a month and I'm still learning what they're really good at and what areas we can find improvement but I was delighted with his performance.

"Andy and Danny, too. The winning goal was a good move. Theo showed a lot of composure to find Danny at the near-post and he timed his run very well. It was a clever finish with the pirouette past the goalkeeper who thought he was going to toe it towards the near post. The finish actually went to the far post. It was a great goal to win the game."
