It came down to the team that wanted it the most. In the end, the Miami Heat were able to string together a couple of baskets that resulted in the 91-85 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 3.
LeBron James only had a 29-point performance, breaking his five-game streak of 30 or more points, and grabbed 14 rebounds. Dwyane Wade scored 25 and had seven assists. They hit game clinching free throws in the final seconds of the game.
Had the Heat simply held on to the ball, Game 3 would not have gone down to the wire. They finished the night with 15 turnovers, nine of which came in the fourth quarter.
Had the Thunder taken full advantage of the Heat's mishaps on offense, they could have been up 2-1 in the series. They shot 7-17 from the floor and had six turnovers of their own in the fourth quarter.
With four fouls in the fourth, Kevin Durant was unable to play aggressive basketball. He finished the night with 25 points and five fouls.
The Thunder will not win if Durant cannot get over 30 points a night, especially with the shooting nights Russell Westbrook has been posting.
Oklahoma City also allowed too many Heat players to score from the paint.
In the first quarter, the Heat scored only two points from the perimeter, a lone jump shot from James. Everything else came from the paint and four free throws in the first 12 minutes.
A team should never allow players to get in the paint, especially when facing James and Wade.
Miami did not have a good day from the perimeter. How can a team win when they only make five shots from the perimeter?
They went 5-31 when shooting from outside. Four of those five made baskets were three pointers.
Ultimately, their ability to get to the foul line saved them and they made 31-35 free throws. The Thunder missed nine from the line making 15-24 free throws.
The Heat now take the 2-1 advantage in the series.
The good news for the Thunder is that the Heat have blown a 2-1 lead in the past. The bad news is that the Heat have already been here before.
