Cleveland Cavaliers Rumors: Kyrie Irving Favors Max Contract Offer, Dion Waiters Trade Likely as Dan Gilbert Makes Luol Deng, Spencer Hawes Returns Priority in 2014

Kyrie Irving is well-aware of his contract status. The franchise player for the Cleveland Cavaliers understands that he could receive big money this summer or he could deny it for a chance to move on sooner rather than later. The point guard will certainly have some decisions to make as the Cavaliers will once again be rebuilding in the offseason. While many believe Irving is headed elsewhere quick, the point guard is offering a few hints that say otherwise.

According to Irving, he wants to be part of something special with the Cavaliers. That could start this summer as the team can offer the point guard a five-year max contract on July 1 to the tune of $80 million. As of now, Irving will be a restricted free agent in 2015 with free agency coming after that. He can either take more money now or leave a lot on the table for the option of departing to another team soon. Irving is aware that there are a lot of possibilities awaiting him.

"Obviously, I 'm aware I can be extended this summer," Irving said, via the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I don't have a definitive answer to that right now, but it'll be something special. It's a big deal for me if they do offer me that. It will be exciting. I'll make the best decision for me and my family. That's what it will boil down to. I've been part of this, and I want to continue to be part of this. We've made some strides in the right direction, especially as an organization. I want to be part of something special. I don't have a definitive answer to that right now."

There had been some thought that the Cavaliers would attempt to shop Irving this summer since there is plenty of uncertainty surrounding whether or not he will sign that max contract. However, the team is denying any intentions to get rid of Irving this summer, instead making it a priority to get him under a new deal as soon as possible.

Dan Gilbert did say there would be major moves coming this summer for the team, including trades. Fans will be quick to say Dion Waiters will be gone right away considering he was shopped at the trade deadline. Irving and Waiters represent a young core of players including Tristan Thompson, Tyler Zeller and Anthony Bennett. One or more of them could be gone.

The Cavaliers are also hoping to retain a few players headed for free agency. Luol Deng is set to hit the market after being traded to the team from the Chicago Bulls. He is ready to join on with a contending team which does not include Cleveland at the moment. The Cavaliers are also hoping to hold on to Spencer Hawes who was dealt at the deadline too. Meanwhile decisions must be made about head coach Mike Brown and their general manager situation. Gilbert will be busy.
