Dallas Cowboys Trade Rumors: Redskins Trading Roy Helu As DeMarco Murray Backup Over Adrian Peterson After Lache Seastrunk Draft Pick?

The Dallas Cowboys need some depth at running back behind DeMarco Murray and a new trade target could be Roy Helu with the Washington Redskins, as the team selected Lache Seastrunk in the draft and he could replace him on the depth chart and this move would be much more realistic for Jerry Jones than the dream of trading for Adrian Peterson with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Cowboys trading for Adrian Peterson would be a dream, but it's probably too hard to get done in the real world and that is why a player like Helu could fit in. The Cowboys have long wanted some more legit depth behind Murray apart from Joseph Randle and Philip Tanner and now that the Redskins have drafted Seastrunk, the team could look to make a move with their division rivals.

Helu could be an interesting option because he won't cost the team much as a player and he likely won't cost much by way of draft picks and that would be one reason why Jones could look at the deal. It probably won't happen, but the team still needs some depth at running back and while adding Zack Martin will be a big help for the offensive line, the team still needs to do more heading into the season. Helu had a nice season last year with 274 rushing yards and four touchdowns and he averaged over four yards per carry and he also ended up with 31 catches on 42 targets and that could be a nice addition to the Cowboys offense for Tony Romo along with Murray.

Murray has been a solid back for the team over the past three years, but he has had issues staying healthy and that could be a reason why the team looks to add another back. Last season Murray had his first 1,000 yard season with 1,121 yards and a career high nine touchdowns, but he missed two games and now he has yet to play a full season in his NFL career. Murray also had a career high in catches last season and with his load getting heavier for the Cowboys, they need productive backups that can handle the load and while Randle has been promising, Tanner still needs to show some more to end up getting more playing time.

The Cowboys would love to get Peterson, as he is a Texas boy and would be right at home in Dallas, but the money that he is owed likely will never allow that to happen unless he gets cut. The Cowboys have been linked to AP because of his star power and the fact that Jerry Jones has made some crazy moves in the past before, but there are likely too many moving parts to get a deal like that done. The news about Peterson and the chance that he could be traded came from Mike Freeman with Bleacher Report and while the news does not mean the Vikings are trading Peterson now, Freeman writes that due to age and money, the time could be coming soon for a split.
