Boston Bruins Trade Rumors Run Wild Ahead of 2012 NHL Draft

Depending on who or what you're listening to, the Boston Bruins are in on just about every major name who's on the trading block as the hours tick away towards the NHL Draft.

The Bruins, who won the Northeast Division in 2011-12 before falling to the Washington Capitals in a hard fought seven-game Eastern Conference quarterfinal series, have been mentioned in connection with everyone from Columbus Blue Jackets center Rick Nash to Anaheim Ducks winger Bobby Ryan to Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle, the latter being the talk of the hockey world on Friday morning with reports that he is available in a trade for the right price and a deal may be imminent (although it hasn't been reported that that deal would be with the Bruins).

Change is already afoot for the Bruins, of course, with goalkeeper Tim Thomas on his way out of town one way or another. The two-time Vezina Trophy winner is planning to sit out the 2012-13 season, but is still on the books for a $3 million salary and a $5 million cap hit. Those numbers could make him an attractive piece for a team that needs a big contract to reach the salary floor. Think Columbus here, or even Phoenix if they are indeed parting with Yandle, their highest-paid player with an annual cap hit of $5.25 million.

However, while the Bruins are already in the process of installing restricted free agent Tukka Rask as the team's goaltender of the future, it's not exactly certain that the Bruins would be in on Yandle, as they're already poised to add top 2011 draft pick Dougie Hamilton to the mix in 2011-12. The Bruins also signed CCHA Player of the Year Torey Krug as a free agent out of Michigan State University, and he recorded his first NHL point (an assist) during his two games with the Bs at the end of the regular season.

If the Bruins are looking to make a deal, expect it to be for a forward. Between Nash, Ryan, and Penguins center Jordan Staal, there's plenty of talent on the market, and the argument could be made that the Bruins can use the help up front more than on the blueline, where they already have a Norris Trophy winner in Zdeno Chara and a scorching hot prospect in Hamilton. Having a star-in-the-making won't preclude the Bs from a chance to pick up an actual star, but there's probably a limit to how much new blood the Bruins will look to add at one time.

In any event, the Bruins could certainly use some salary cap room. According to CapGeek.com, the Bs have just under $4 million in cap space available, and they still have to get Rask under contract. Clearing some cap room for that signing will likely be part of the goal for Boston if a trade is indeed in the works.

Whatever is or isn't happening in Boston, it's definitely a situation worth monitoring as the NHL Draft approaches.
