Oakland Raiders Trade Rumors: Matt McGloin Traded To Houston Texans For Andre Johnson If Derek Carr Starts?

The Oakland Raiders and Houston Texans could pull off a trade involving Matt McGloin and Andre Johnson this offseason, as head coach Bill O'Brien has Penn State connections to McGloin and he could bring him in to start over Tom Savage, while the Raiders could be motivated to add a receiver like Johnson as Matt Schaub and rookie Derek Carr compete for the starting job in 2014.

The Houston Texans have Tom Savage coming in as a rookie and they also have Ryan Fitzpatrick and while the team feels comfortable with that, rumors have come up that they were interested in trading for Ryan Mallett. Another option for the team is Matt McGloin and there is a chance the Raiders could try and pull off a trade for Andre Johnson that includes the quarterback swap as well. The moves are unlikely for both, but the Raiders could look at making a move with McGloin for a draft pick and the connection with Bill O'Brien could get the Texans interested.

Tom Savage is a solid prospect and could turn into a good QB, but right now he has no NFL experience and while McGloin didn't go crazy while starting last season, he clearly would be a better option in the short term. O'Brien coached up McGloin at Penn State and got some good play out of him and now that he is with the Raiders and is behind Derek Carr and Matt Schaub, this could be the perfect time for a move.

Johnson has not demanded a trade yet so that still needs to play out, but come training camp if things are not resolved and he remains away from the team, expect someone like the Raiders to step up to the plate. Last season Johnson had 109 catches for 1,407 yards and five scores despite playing with Case Keenum and Schaub for most of the season and he put up some of his best career numbers with Schaub and could reunite with him in Oakland.

Last season McGloin had eight touchdowns and eight picks with 1,547 yards passing while splitting time with Pryor and he could be a nice option for this season with the Texans. The Raiders have Derek Carr behind Schaub for now, but that may not last and he could end up winning the job or at least giving Schaub some nice competition in the summer. Either way, while this trade could be tough to pull off, it's something both sides may consider.

The Raiders are one of a number of teams that were in the market for a quarterback and they had the chance to use free agency or the NFL draft to fill it, as they did not see enough from Matt McGloin or Terrelle Pryor last season to give them the starting job again without bringing in someone else and now it's Schaub. According to ESPN.com, Schaub was the top target for the Raiders and that is why they pulled the trigger on him despite what happened to them last season when they traded for Matt Flynn. The Raiders have the money to spend on one of the free agents left on the market and they could also use that money later on when they need to sign draft picks.
