Carpenter won for the second straight year in the pole and was the fastest in qualifying and he was the last of the nine to go on the track and overtook James Hinchcliffe on the last lap and he gets the chance to come in over Helio Castroneves, who has won the event four times already before, while Simon Pagenaud and Marco Andretti. Carlos Munoz, Josef Newgarden and JR Hildebrand were next and that comes after Tony Kanaan was the winner in 2013 over rookie Carlos Munoz and now Munoz will be in nice position and Carpenter comes in being from the city and he also happens to be a stepson of one of the former speedway execs and he will be looking to get things going.

Carpenter did not have much support last year and now he gets the chance to come in better funded and now Hildebrand is in with another car and could be in his best position since getting passed by winner Dan Wheldon in 2011 and now Carpenter is hoping that will give him more good fortune.

Former NASCAR champion Kurt Busch came in after Scott Dixon and he is trying to pull off an amazing feat by racing in Indy and also going for the Coca Cola 500 and that means he will be going for over 1,000 miles on the day as he competes in both. Busch said that if he won the Indy he would have to cross that bridge when it comes about dealing with post race obligations, but he said he was excited to attempt the feat. Busch had some trouble in practice with his car bursting into flames a bit and he admitted he made mistake and said he would be ready for it on race day.

The Verizon IndyCar Series championship leader is Will Power coming into the race and he won the pole at the Grand Prix of Alabama this season, while also winning the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and the last race saw Simon Pagenaud win in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis.
