Once again, could Jeff Samardzija be making his final start for the Chicago Cubs? The pitcher is headed for the trade market as he continues to be one of the league's best on one of the league's worst teams. Samardzija is essentially wasting away in Chicago and with no intentions to sign an extension with the team, the Cubs will likely try and seek a deal before the end of the summer. However, for now he remains in Chicago and facing the league's best San Francisco Giants.
The Giants are rolling on all cylinders right now. The are looking for their fifth straight win as they continue to be one of the best team's in baseball. The Giants are completing a 180 degree turnaround after finishing 10 games below .500 last year. Now, they have 59 home runs on the year and third lowest ERA with 3.05.
Several offseason adjustments can be credited to the turnaround, but Michael Morse might be the biggest one. He is thriving in his first year in San Francisco. He has 10 home runs and 33 RBIs on the year. Against the Minnesota Twins, he put up three doubles and four RBIs in one of his best games of the season. Going up against the NL-worst Chicago Cubs could mean another big game for Morse, but Samardzija at the mound could change that.
The pitcher has yet to win a game, but not because of his arm. Samardzija has a 1.46 ERA and yet is 0-4 on the season thanks to a lack of run support. One of the best pitchers in baseball has a 16-start losing streaking that dates back to last August. The Cubs are putting up just 2.48 runs of support for their star pitcher.
He recently threw seven scoreless innings off the Yankees, but lost in a 13-inning game. In seven games against the Giants, he is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in seven starts. The Cubs beat San Francisco four of seven times last season and hope to keep up the momentum.
