Didier Drogba is being linked with a shock move to Barcelona, according to widespread reports in the Spanish press.
Drogba only announced last week, he had joined Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua on a lucrative deal worth £200,000 a week ($310,000). Despite agreeing to a contract with the Chinese club, reports in Spain suggest Drogba has a clause in the deal which allows him to move to Barcelona for free.
It is being reported that the striker is due to arrive in Spain later on Tuesday. Respected Spanish soccer correspondent Guillem Balague, while admitting the reports might have some truth in them, said he doubts if a deal will be made.
"In Spain it is being reported that Didier Drogba is arriving tomorrow to Barcelona to sign for FC Barcelona.
"Drogba has got a clause that allows him to leave Shanghai Shenhua for free if Barcelona came calling.
"He will meet the Spanish club on Tuesday.
"Despite the meeting on Tuesday, Barcelona club sources say they won't sign Drogba, wages too high."
Drogba left his long-time club Chelsea at the end of last season after scoring the winning penalty in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich. After much deliberation, the Ivory Coast striker announced he had signed for Shanghai last Wednesday.
