Maria Sharapova Wins French Open 2014 Championship at Roland Garros Against Simona Halep

Maria Sharapova won the 2014 French Open title against Simona Halep on Saturday 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 at Roland Garros for her second major in Paris and now the championship on Sunday comes down to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on the men's side of things and Sharapova won despite struggling with her serve and it was the first final for Halep.

Sharapova won the first set and had chances in the second before losing in the tiebreak and she won 6-4 in the final set to win the championship, her second at Roland Garros. Serena Williams won last year, but she was eliminated early on in the tournament and now Sharapova has won the major despite having 12 double faults in the match and it comes after she won at Roland Garros two years ago to complete the career Slam.

Halep showed that she is a player to watch moving forward on the women's side and that is good for the game, while Sharapova claimed another title to put her near the top of things with Williams. The two went back and forth with breaks and in the final set there were five breaks of serve in the 10 games and it was only the first time since 2001 that a women's final at the French went three sets. Sharapova used to be much weaker on clay, but over the past few years she has stepped her game up and now she has two French Open titles.
