Wimbledon 2012 Results and Updates from Day Four: Sharapova and Serena Williams Advance into Third Round

The ladies took the court early Thursday morning.

Maria Sharapova continues to dominate in Wimbledon as the No. 1 ranked player defeated 38th ranked Tsvetana Pironkova in a completion of Wednesday's rained out match.

Pironkova put up a great fight as she won the second set, 7(7)-6(3). Sharapova, however, put her away in the first and third sets of the match by the scores of 7(7)-6(3), 6-0.

Serena Williams (6th) also advanced into the third round after beating Melinda Czink (98th in two straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

In other matches, Italian, Roberta Vinci (23rd) advanced to the third round after defeating Marina Erakovic (49th), 6-4, 6-3.

20-year old, Christina McHale, ranked 32nd in Wimbledon barely got passed Mathilde Johansson (81st), 7-5, 7-5.

German Angelique Kerber (8th) beat Ekaterina Makarova 7-5, 6-3.

Over in the Men's Singles there were upsets earlier today.

 Xavier Malisse came into Wimbledon ranked 75th. He faced 13th ranked, Gilles Simon. Malisse upset Simon in three straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(5).

Malisse, who is 31, has never won a Grand Slam title in his 14-year career.

Brian Baker is ranked in triple digits. He currently stands at No. 126.

Ranks are just a number to Baker as he defeated Jarkko Nieminen, who came into Wimbledon 44th in the rankings, in three straight sets by the scores of 6-0, 6-2, 6-4.

Kei Nishikori (19th) of Japan defeated the French, Florent Serra in three straight sets 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.

There is plenty of tennis left to be played at Wimbledon as Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga have matches later on in the day.
