The clubs' last competitive match was at the 2006 World Cup, where the Italians denied the host Germans a chance to go to the finals with a 2-0 victory in extra time before going on to win the World Cup themselves by defeating France on penalty kicks. The most recent friendly between the nations, played last February in Dortmund, ended in a 1-1 draw.
The semifinal is a matchup between the No. 3 and No. 12 teams in the world according to the most recent FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings, with No. 3 Germany looking to avenge its 2006 loss and get a shot at dethroning World No. 1 Spain in the finals. Italy played the Spaniards to a draw during the group stage.
