Andrew Wiggins was the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft to a team that is desperate to make it to the postseason. The forward is seen as a new wave of players that will help the Cleveland Cavaliers become contenders once again in the Eastern Conference once again. Pairing with Kyrie Irving, Wiggins has all the confidence success is coming and that Lebron James might as well.
Wiggins has not even been a member of the Cavaliers for 24 hours and already he is planning on doing some free agency recruiting of the league's biggest star. It is no secret the Cavaliers are hoping to lure back James to his hometown team, hoping Wiggins as a good piece to the puzzle. The new rookie certainly would love to teamup with the four-time MVP.
"I want to win," Wiggins said, via the New York Times. "If he wants to win, we'd be good together."
According to Chris Broussard of ESPN, the Cavaliers are the biggest threat to the Miami Heat when it comes to signing James. Some might be surprised by that statement. The Chicago Bulls want James and they have Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose to help. The Houston Rockets are targeting the forward with Dwight Howard and James Harden. The Los Angeles Lakers are using friend Kobe Bryant to recruit the start. The Cavaliers have Irving and Wiggins and have not been to the playoffs since James first left the team.
Miami has an upper hand after drafting James' favorite college player, Shabazz Napier. James has said he believes the former Connecticut star was the best point guard in the draft. Miami traded up to get him, possibly to help their chances of re-signing James. Considering what the forward has done with the Heat over the past four seasons, it is hard to see him leaving South Beach.
Still, if the Heat make no effort to add marquee additions to the roster, James will depart. Dwyane Wade appears set to stay. President Pat Riley said he expects the guard to be in a Heat uniform next season. Chris Bosh has said multiple times that he intends to stay put, but several teams are aiming to give him more money. If everyone is retained and someone else is added then James is al-but guaranteed to remain in Miami.
