English Premier League Transfer News: Guthrie, Pogrebnyak Sign for Reading

Danny Guthrie signed a three-year contract with newly- promoted Reading, after his release from Newcastle United, while Russia striker Pavel Pogrebnyak agreed terms with the Royals.

Guthrie completed a medical on Friday, with the 25-year-old opting to join the Royals after a difficult season for Newcastle last campaign in the English Premier League, where he found first-team opportunities hard to come by.

"It feels brilliant to have signed, it is a great honour and I am very excited," Guthrie told the club's official website.

"As soon as I met the manager and Nick Hammond my mind was made up, it was a no-brainer.

"Reading Football Club is a fantastic family club, well run and I'm so excited to be part of something special for this club."

The signings of highly-rated Russian striker Pogrebnyak and Guthrie is sure to strengthen the club further as the Championship winners, under manager Brian McDermott, look to begin well in the EPL.

"We're delighted Danny has signed for us," McDermott said.

"He brings good experience at a good age, he has real ability to pass the ball, he's got energy and he is what Reading is all about, a hungry player.

"We're looking to add players who we think will be good for us over a number of years, not just next season, adding to the players who have already done fantastically well for us."

"I would like to welcome Danny to Reading and wish him every success here," Reading chairman John Madejski said.

Director of football Hammond added: "Danny is a player we have admired for a long time and we have been aware of him since he first broke into the Premier League at Bolton.

"He has great experience at this level, most recently for a massive club in Newcastle playing in front of big crowds on a regular basis."

Reading confirmed on their website, the expected signing of Pogrebnyak. "Reading football club has agreed terms with Pavel Pogrebnyak to join the club," a statement on the club's official website said.

"The player has already completed a medical and the deal is now only subject to the player obtaining a UK work permit.

"Reading football club anticipate completing the signing within the next seven days."
