The NFL draft is long over and training camps are starting up and after numerous trade rumors from earlier in the summer, many teams opted not to go through with deals and names like Kirk Cousins, Ryan Mallett, Mike Glennon and Christian Ponder remain on their original teams, as the New England Patriots, Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings kept their quarterbacks, but deals could be coming in the future.
ESPN.com and NFL.com reported rumors about all the players mentioned above, including Mallett and Glennon, who each had offers made during the draft but those were rebuffed by their teams. Bill Belichick has spoken about how the team likes how Mallett has handled himself as the back for Tom Brady over the past few years, while Lovie Smith came into Tampa and said that Glennon still has a future with the team despite bringing in Josh McCown to start this season.
Kirk Cousins is a name that still could move this offseason, as the Browns at one point offered the Redskins a fourth round pick for the QB, but they felt that was not high enough to make the deal. Cousins was talked about more than any other backup QB heading into the draft and at the time teams like the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans needed quarterbacks. The Browns went for Johnny Manziel so they are probably feeling pretty good, while the Texans picked Tom Savage and while he may not be the starter in Week 1, the team feels comfortable having not made a trade during the drat for Cousins or Mallett.
Ponder was talked about a bit before the draft about being moved, but no one had any interest and now his future in Minnesota is in question after what they did in the draft. The team had Matt Cassel signed already when they went into things and they opted to draft Teddy Bridgewater with the number 32 pick in the first round. Even if Bridgewater doesn't start, he will be in front of Ponder on the depth chart and that makes things even tough for him heading into the future after he has been a disappointment for the Vikings.
The Patriots made an interesting move by taking Garoppolo and doing it in the second round means that it was no joke from Bill Belichick. The team may see Garoppolo as a future starter and they most definitely see him as the future backup to Tom Brady, as Ryan Mallett's contract is up this year and now he can easily slide into that role next year without the team dealing with a contract issue. The team still could trade Mallett, but Belichick feels good about the value they got for him since taking him in the draft and now Garoppolo could be the starter for the future. Garoppolo had over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns last season and while he played at Eastern Illinois, those stats were eye popping even for Belichick.
