Manchester City and Liverpool are playing live on the Guinness International Champions Cup schedule from Yankee Stadium on Wednesday and the matchup between English Premier League sides is one of the most anticipated of the preseason and starts up at 7:00 pm ET on FOX and streaming online as the EPL champions face off against the runners up from last season.
Man City comes in loaded and Liverpool has undergone some changes, including Luis Suarez moving to Barcelona. Man City played at Yankee Stadium against Chelsea last year and that saw eight goals and now these two teams will be looking to get in shape as they prepare for the upcoming season. Man City and the Yankees have a connection with NYCFC and they will start playing games in the MLS in 2015 and now the Citizens take over the baseball pitch for the night with the Yankees on a road trip in Texas playing against the Rangers.
Man City is expected to have their top players heading into the preseason stretch and they got some good news from Yaya Toure, as he put water on any rumors of him going anywhere. There were some reports about Toure being unhappy with the club and not wishing him a happy birthday, but clearly that was overblown and he praised Manuel Pellegrini and now is in the fold and he said he wants to stay with the team for a long time. The Citizens won the title over Liverpool last season and now both want to get into top form for the start of the year this time around and these preseason tune-ups are a good way to do it.
In the previous matchups for the teams, Manchester City had a nice performance against AC Milan and they won 5-1 and they will be looking to bring that offense to the Bronx. That game was in a football stadium in Pittsburgh where the Steelers play and that gave the team the chance to go big and they ended up going up 4-1 before finishing off with five goals and Liverpool won their game, as they matched up with Olympiakos at Soldier Field. That game was big for the Reds, as they have some positive results to look at and they are coming into a very anticipated season after losing Luis Suarez and nearly winning the Premier League title. These two teams were close in the standings and now they are some of the favorites for the EPL this season.
Manchester City was like the little brother to Manchester United in the past, but after winning an English Premier League title a few years ago then again last year, they feel like they are close to being equals to the Red Devils. This may not be a perfect comparison, but for American fans Man City on top of Man U is like how the Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers have changed their standing in the league for the time being, with the perennial champion Lakers hitting hard times while the Clippers are making runs in the playoffs.
