The Detroit Tigers loaded up on Cy Young winners at the trade deadline when they acquire David Price to go with their already-stellar rotation, but that has not proved to be an issue for the New York Yankees who got past Price, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander in the past three games. Now the Yankees must get past one more big arm in order to split the four-game series.
Brian McCann and Chase Headley were the home run heroes that got New York past Verlander on Wednesday in a 5-1 win. That was the second straight game McCann hit a home run while Headley's home run ends a 3 for 23 streak in his previous six games. The Yankees will start rookie Shane Greene who is 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA on the season. He gave up three runs in one inning during his last start and gave up six hits to the Boston Red Sox. He is starting after New York got decimated with injuries to their pitching rotation. New York is hoping they will not have to deal with Greene in the postseason.
The Tigers will bring yet another top arm to the mound in Rick Porcello. He is a New York native and in two starts at Yankee Stadium, he has given up nine runs, 12 hits and five walks in 10 innings. In his last four starts, Porcello is 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA while being 13-5 with a 3.18 ERA overall. Hot hitter Headley is 2 for 3 with a double and home run against the pitcher.
Both the Yankees and Tigers are dealing with injuries. Mark Teixeira will be out this matchup after cutting his pinkie sliding into home plate on Wednesday. Torii Hunter is expected to miss his second straight game after being hit on the hand with a pitch. He is not expected to miss too much time, but is day-to-day.
