The Detroit Pistons have looked at a trade with Josh Smith to the Sacramento Kings this summer and while that deal failed, the team may look at trying again this season and Brandon Jennings could be involved later, as the Kings have been interested in Rajon Rondo and if they can't get their hands on him, they could go after another athletic point guard like Jennings.
The Pistons have been looking to trade Smith so that they can sign restricted free agent Greg Monroe, but so far the team has not been able to agree on a deal. According to ESPN.com, the Pistons and Kings were talking about a deal involving Jason Thompson or Derrick Williams, but the two sides could not agree. Smith is making a nice chunk of money over the next couple years and that is another reason why he could be moved.
The Pistons are building around Andre Drummond and Monroe is considered to be one of the best young talents in the league and moving Smith would open up more space and minutes for both players. The Kings could turn their attention to Jennings if they can't pull off a deal for Rondo, as he is another point guard that could fit the system they want to run and they are also rebuilding this year once again.
The Kings want Smith to pair with DeMarcus Cousins, as Cousins has shown that he is a great young player despite his attitude and maturity issues. Cousins and Smith could be a nice pairing in the front court and the Kings see themselves at least competing for a playoff spot if they can get those two together.
The Kings were rumored to be in talks with the Boston Celtics about Rajon Rondo, but the two sides later came out and said those rumors were not true. The Celtics and Rondo have said they they want to start the season together and see how things play out, but Rondo will be a target once again at the deadline and the Celtics will have a major decision to make. Rondo wants to hit free agency to make his money and the Celtics don't want to jump into an extension so they can see if he can stay healthy after tearing his ACL.
The Pistons are in a slight rebuild, but they have the chance to get better with Stan Van Gundy coming in to take over. The team signed Jodie Meeks and also added Caron Butler and they have young stars in Drummond and possibly Monroe to build around along with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope after taking him last year. The team was not very good last season and that is why Joe Dumars is out and now Stan the man gets to work his magic as coach and exec.
