MLB All Star Game: Matt Cain Will be National League Starter

Matt Cain will start for the National League in the 2012 All-Star Game in Kansas City on Tuesday night.

Cain has posted great numbers this season. He is 9-3 with a 2.62 earned runs average. He has 118 strikeouts in 120.1 innings pitched.

Also cannot forget about the perfect game he threw back on June 13th against the Houston Astros.

For Cain it is his third All-Star selection and first start in an All-Star game.

Many fans thought R.A. Dickey would have been the sure choice to start the game for the NL.

He has the best winning percentage amongst starting pitching after posting a 12-1 record in the first half of the season.

Dickey also has a 2.40 ERA, while striking out 123 batters in 120 innings pitched with only 26 walks.

What makes these numbers spectacular is Dickey's ability to command his knuckleball, which is a tough pitch to control.

For the N.L. manager, Tony LaRussa, a big factor in his decision was catcher Buster Posey.

Fans voted in Posey as the starting catcher. He does not possess experience with knuckeball pitchers. LaRussa would prefer for his All-Star catcher to shine and not look like an amature during the game.

The 2012 MLB All-Star Game will be televised on FOX and begins a little after 8 p.m.
